It lasts two and a half hours, starts from piazza del Gesù Nuovo 7, in front of the tourist information office, and includes the guide, admission to the Cappella Sansevero, and entry to the cloister of Santa Chiara on selected dates and times. The route is the one I would take if accompanying someone for the first time: Gesù Nuovo, the cloister of Santa Chiara, the stretch of Spaccanapoli up to piazza San Domenico Maggiore, piazzetta Nilo, the Cappella Sansevero, San Lorenzo Maggiore, piazza San Gaetano, via San Gregorio Armeno, via dei Tribunali, and the Duomo. In the Cappella Sansevero, a maximum of thirty people enter at a time, so admission is staggered.

Who chooses what

- You’re more interested in the story than the list of monuments. The tour on origins, cults, and legends starts from piazza Bellini, has small groups, a licensed and art-and-archaeology-savvy guide, and ends on via Duomo. It’s also available as a private tour.

Take the morning slot. In summer, at noon, the decumanus is narrow and shadeless, and from November to January 6, via San Gregorio Armeno is shoulder-to-shoulder. Early, or on a weekday, you can walk and hear the guide.
