Veiled Christ: short visit or long tour
What’s inside
The Veiled Christ is by Giuseppe Sanmartino, 1753, arrived after Antonio Corradini’s death in 1752. In the underground chamber are the two anatomical machines, traditionally attributed to Giuseppe Salerno around 1763. Raimondo di Sangro, the seventh Prince of Sansevero, wanted all of it, and the chapel reads as a single piece: without someone telling you who he was and what he had in mind, it remains a beautiful sculpture in a small room.
The rooms are narrow, and in Cappella Sansevero you enter in groups of up to thirty at a time. Photography inside is not allowed. Entry is by time slot, so the real question isn’t how much it costs but what time you go in.
Short visit or full tour
The guided tour of the chapel lasts thirty-five minutes and covers the Veiled Christ, the anatomical machines, and Raimondo di Sangro. It’s available in Italian, English, and French, with meeting points in piazza San Domenico Maggiore or in front of the chapel, depending on the option. The city centre tour, on the other hand, lasts two and a half hours, starts at piazza del Gesù Nuovo 7, and also includes the cloister of Santa Chiara and the stretch of decumanus up to the Duomo.

Book an early morning time slot, especially in summer. Then go out, take a short walk to piazzetta Nilo, and look at the Corpo di Napoli: it’s thirty metres away, and almost no one stops there.
