How much does it cost to visit Spaccanapoli
What’s free and what isn’t
This is the distinction that answers half the questions I get. Walking, looking, photographing the street, entering a church: nothing to pay. Passing through a door that leads to a cloister or a private chapel: that has its own ticket, and it’s not included in the church next door’s entry.
You don’t pay for
- Walking all of Spaccanapoli, from the two-kilometre route to the monumental stretch between piazza del Gesù Nuovo and via Duomo
- The squares: Gesù Nuovo with the spire of the Immacolata, San Domenico Maggiore, the piazzetta Nilo with the Corpo di Napoli
- Admiring the diamond-pointed façade of Gesù Nuovo
- Entering the basilica of Santa Chiara and the other churches on the decumanus
- Walking along via San Gregorio Armeno among the nativity workshops
- Seeing the street from above from the Certosa di San Martino belvedere
Paid separately
- The maiolica cloister of Santa Chiara, which has a separate entrance from the church
- The Cappella Sansevero, where the Veiled Christ is
- The underground, which can only be visited with a guided tour
- A licensed guide, in a group or private
- Tastings included in street food tours
- Pick-up and drop-off at your hotel for private tours
What makes the price of a tour go up
Two tours of the same duration can cost very differently, and almost always the difference is one of these four.
- The format. A group shares the guide, a private tour does not. In a private tour, you pay for the guide in full, and it’s booked per group, not per person: the logic is explained on the private tours page.
- Included entries. The historic centre tour includes the Cappella Sansevero and the cloister of Santa Chiara: those two tickets are included in the price, so the comparison should be on the total, not the tour line. The short visit to the Cappella includes just the ticket, and I explain it in Veiled Christ.
- What you eat and drink. A tour with meatballs, fried pizza, liqueurs, and babà includes food: it counts as lunch. I cover this in detail in the street food tours.
- Transfers. Pick-up and drop-off at your hotel are only available for private tours. The historic centre tour doesn’t include meals or transfers, and the meeting point is on foot in piazza del Gesù Nuovo.

Don’t judge by the price of the tour, but by the total cost. If you buy tickets for the Cappella Sansevero and the cloister of Santa Chiara separately and then add a guide, the comparison with a tour that already includes them changes significantly. And the Cappella has timed entry: if you arrive without a slot, you wait.

It can be done, and it’s not a fallback. You walk the stretch between piazza del Gesù Nuovo and via Duomo, enter the churches with shoulders and knees covered, stop in piazzetta Nilo, go up to San Gregorio Armeno, and finish with coffee at the counter. Frequently asked questions
Do you have to pay to enter Spaccanapoli?
No. It’s a public street in the historic centre, always open and partly pedestrianised: there’s no ticket to walk it. You only pay for some interiors that open onto it. Which ones are listed in what to see.
Does the ticket for the basilica of Santa Chiara include the cloister?
No, they are two separate entrances: the church can be visited freely, the maiolica cloister with the tiles by Donato and Giuseppe Massa has its own ticket. Some tours include it, and they are listed in all tours.
Is the tour or separate tickets more convenient?
It depends on how many interiors you want to see. For just the Cappella Sansevero, the short guided visit is straightforward, and I describe it in Veiled Christ. If you also want the cloister of Santa Chiara and someone to explain, the city centre tour puts everything in one package.
Why aren’t there prices on this site?
Because they change with the date, language, and number of people, and a number written here would be outdated within a week. The current price is in the booking box above and on the home page.
